During the 2007 financial year, AFM invested 105 023 876 euros in the social missions (research programs and services) as laid down in the Statutes of the Association, including 34,6% helping patients (36,3 million euros). The budget for this particular mission is intended to help patients and their families have the best quality of life while waiting for a cure.

AFM is engaged in 4 types of actions :

>>> Medical and paramedical actions for which AFM invested 4 912 469 euros in 2007 mainly cover :
  • Financial support for pluridisciplinary « neuromuscular disease » consultations shared between the different hospital centres throughout France.
  • Collect, publication and dissemination of information about muscles and neuromuscular diseases to health professionals.
  • Improvement of patients’ medical management.


>>> Lobbying actions
for which AFM invested 5 175 955 euros in 2007 mainly cover :
  • Financial help granted by AFM to patients and their families who are waiting for social security services to provide adequate means for compensation. It reached a total amount of 2 294 563 euros in 2007.
  • Actions for the recognition of rare diseases, in partnership with other organisations (1 275 627 euros in 2007) (as well as the sums invested in research).
  • Legal support for persons experiencing a disability or disease-related legal problem (224 043 euros in 2007).


>>> Actions to support patients and their families
for which AFM invested 17 657 059 euros in 2007 mainly cover :
  • Regional Services for a total amount of 11 947 724 euros in 2007.
  • The DRAC, AFM’s Communication Activities Research Department seeks to find innovative solutions, via computers, to restore communication and fight isolation among patients. This activity represented a cost of nearly 1 198 160 euros in 2007.
  • Facilities and services for families which translate into funding of accomodation facilities for short stays, and also of a team of people to answer calls on a hotline (1 115 414 euros in 2007).
  • The development of innovative technical aids for the restoration of those functions interrupted by the disease. This is done by financing projects in collaboration with research teams or industrial companies, or through participation in the development of prototypes and in their evaluation (1 129 860 euros in 2007).
  • The finalisation of the call for projects launched in the follow-through of the law of 11 February 2005 concerning the “equality of rights and opportunities, and the participation and citizenship of disabled persons.” This call for projects is aimed at developing, renewing and reorienting partnerships in the fields of compensation and quality of life and represented an engagement of 359 096 euros in 2007.


>>> The functioning of the Association
for which AFM invested 1 424 697 euros in 2007 mainly covers :
  • AFM’s local actions via its 75 delegations.
  • Support for the establishment of 6 « patient groups » (Groupes d’intérêt) composed of patients affected by the same disease.
  • The organisation of the annual conference of families and members (« Journée des Familles »). The objective here is for families to meet all those who play a role in the fight against disease (researchers, physicians, paramedics, integration assistants etc) and to learn about research developments, treatments, legislation or technologies at their disposal.
