Curing Diseases

As AFM’s main objective is to cure neuromuscular diseases, the Association dedicates most of its social mission funds to curing diseases.
During the 2007 financial year, AFM invested 105 023 876 euros in the social missions (research programs and services) as laid down in the Statutes of the Association, including 66 million euros in curing diseases.

>>> The 2007 funds for research and development of therapies include :

- 2 225 655 euros invested in international research programs :
*The University of Pennsylvania (USA) for an Infantile Spinal Muscular Atrophy program.
*Laval University (Canada) for a preclinical evaluation programme in the transgenic mouse aimed at correcting muscle anomalies and validating non-invasive techniques for evaluating muscle functions (the Puymirat project).
*Cellgène (canadian company)  for a programme of cell therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (programme Tremblay).

- 8 615 641 euros invested in academic partnerships for which AFM supports the development of sites of excellence on gene-based therapies : the Nantes centre of infrastructures (set up in 1996 with the support of the AFM), Ecole nationale vétérinaire at Alfort, Genopole at Evry, partnerships for rare diseases (Rare Diseases Institute and Imagine Foundation), molecule screening platform for parasite worm pathology models.

- 8 609 887 euros invested in industrial research programmes within the framework of agreements with the biotechnology companies Transgène (trial for Duchenne and Becker myopathies), Trophos (motoneuron diseases), Prosensa (exon-skipping therapy in Duchenne muscular dystrophy) and a new research programme aiming to apply "genomic surgery.".

- 11 699 837 euros invested in grants and fellowships as part of the AFM Call for Proposals.

-1 055 546 euros granted to patient associations to support their research programs on gene and cell therapies.

>>> Généthon laboratory

Généthon’s total resources in 2007 were 23 160 660 euros of which 87.8% came from the AFM. The other resources mainly stem from personnel on detachment to the AFM from the CNRS, Inserm and the University of Evry (1 254 719 euros).

In 2007 the expenditure granted by the AFM to Généthon came to 21 189 956  euros, in other words 20 715 000 euros of subsidies to which should be added 474 956 euros of property costs linked to the laboratory (maintenance, land tax, depreciation etc).

>>> Institute of Myology

The Institute of Myology in Paris is a centre of expertise dedicated to the muscle. It associates different muscle expert teams in order to progress research into neuromuscular diseases, encourage the crossover from research to therapies and improve patient diagnosis, management and follow-up as well as the dissemination of knowledge of myology.
During 2007, the AFM allocated the Institute of Myology a subsidy of 7 138 000 euros, made up of a 5 997 000 euro operating subsidy and a 1 141 000 euro investment subsidy.

>>> I-Stem

I-Stem’s resources are made up of subsidies granted by the AFM to the CECS, by public funding (Génopole, Inserm, the Ile-de-France region, the University of Evry etc), by the financing of projects and the making available of equipment (mainly by Génopole).
In 2007 the AFM allocated I-Stem a subsidy of 2 600 000 euros. Moreover, the AFM took on investments of more than 780 000 euros in order to fit out new laboratory facilities and purchase equipment.
