Inaugurated in 1997 and located in the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, the Institut de Myologie (Myology Institute) is a genuine center for international expertise in the field of muscle.
Created and financed by AFM in partnership with the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) and Inserm, the Myology Institute pursues three goals: research, treatment and teaching on a single subject - muscle.
In october 2005, AFM and Généthon created Association Institut de Myologie.
This association is the natural follow-through and prolongation of the AFM within the Institute.
The objective of the Association Institute of Myology is the development of the clinical and scientific fields of myology so that it can pursue its already-stated objectives of :
- bringing together research, clinical activity and teaching in the same location and grouping effective means of investigation for disease and care
- creating a centre of expertise and reference on the muscle and its pathology and setting up coordinated programmes of clinical research
- participating in the development of new therapies and providing families with adequate reception facilities, a sympathetic ear and medical expertise
- training and disseminating information so that neuromuscular diseases are better known and recognised
This new “association” status will allow the Institute of Myology to continue on its path towards the final objective – becoming a Foundation dedicated to myology.
