It is now more than 20 years since the AFM families launched their relentless campaign to fight disease, demonstrating the courageous spirit of those who have nothing left to lose.
Their ambition, driven by the urgency of their situation is to fight the inevitable, reverse the natural course of events and invent the medicine of tomorrow, capable of curing their sick children.
The medical revolution is gathering momentum and producing its first results to help patients. Through Telethon, a collective battle is being fought for the benefit of the greatest number of people, proving that TOGETHER we really are stronger than ANYTHING.
In 2009, new breakthroughs are emerging for children affected by two other types of genetic diseases, one a neurological disease (adrenoleukodystrophy) and the other, a blood disease (thalassaemia).
Buoyed by these results, the Telethon 2009 aims to provide us with the resources we need to move on to the next crucial phase :
- 2010 will see the launch of an array of trials for new diseases : more than 30 trials concerning 30 diseases have been or are about to be launched.
- AFM is firmly convinced that 2010 will be the start of a decade of concrete results for other patients or other diseases;
- The path towards new treatments for other serious diseases should be mapped out in 2010.
Each trial represents an investment of several million euros over several years. Each trial paves the way for concrete solutions for patients and other diseases. The funds raised by the Telethon are essential since AFM is a major partner in trials in the field of rare diseases.
We need to be audacious and enthusiastic on 4 and 5 December; we need to rally TOGETHER so we are stronger than ANYTHING ! Stronger than indifference. Stronger to share. Stronger to advance. Stronger to rally support. Stronger than disease. Stronger to cure.
